- Issued by SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance), the world’s largest testing company.
- Per-batch reports — not a single generic cert.
- Chain-store QA teams will reject a supplier who only sends their own internal QA.
2. ISO 9001:2015 — Quality Management System
What it covers: the factory’s quality management system — process control, document control, internal audit, corrective action, and continuous improvement.
- Issued by accredited certification bodies (BSI, TÜV, SGS, BV).
- Validates that every production line runs under a documented QA protocol.
- For cat litter specifically: dust-extraction protocols, dust-spec verification, and traceability per lot.
3. BSCI (amfori) — Social Compliance
What it covers: working conditions, fair wages, working hours, no child labour, no forced labour, and occupational health & safety.
- Issued by amfori BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative).
- Audit cycle typically 2–3 years.
- Essential for European chain-store buyers — German, French, and UK retailers will reject suppliers without BSCI or equivalent.
4. Sedex SMETA — Ethical Trade Audit
What it covers: labour standards, health & safety, environment, and business integrity (a 4-pillar audit framework).
- Issued via Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange).
- Many UK and EU retailers prefer SMETA over BSCI because of broader coverage.
- Audit reports are uploaded to Sedex and shared with buyer members.
5. MSDS — Material Safety Data Sheet
What it covers: safe handling, storage, transport, and disposal information for the substrate. Required by destination-market hazardous-goods regulators.
- Issued per SKU per destination market.
- For tofu cat litter: declares 100% soybean residue, no chemical additives, compostable under industrial conditions.
- Mandatory for marine transport (IMDG code) and warehouse storage in most jurisdictions.
How to read a supplier’s certificate set
When a tofu cat litter manufacturer sends their cert list, check five things:
- Cert validity: each cert has an issue date and expiry date. Reject any cert that’s expired or has been “renewed” without a fresh audit.
- Cert scope: ISO 9001 specifically should cover “pet products manufacturing” or “cat litter manufacturing” — not a generic “trading company” scope.
- Issuing body: verify the issuing body is accredited (e.g. UKAS for ISO 9001, amfori for BSCI).
- Batch-specific SGS: ask for a recent batch-specific SGS report — not just the company’s annual SGS membership card.

What each cert does NOT cover
Common gaps in supplier cert stacks:
- ISO 9001 ≠ product safety — it covers the QA process, not the actual product. You still need SGS batch testing.
- BSCI / Sedex ≠ environmental compliance — these are social-compliance audits. For biodegradability claims, you need the OECD 301B SGS test.
- MSDS ≠ FDA approval — MSDS is a hazard communication document. For US distribution, FDA labelling guidance is a separate review.
